I think this is a widespread dilemma, but very notorious in research: everyone wants to be original but no one wants to be the odd out. So there’s a real conflict between how much creativity and originallity one is willing to dare, at the one side, and at the other side, the fear of coming up with something hilariously stupid.
But the unoriginal, undaring can be very stupid indeed. Maybe more stupid than an original nonsense idea. I specialy feel repulsed by those articles that start stating there is a problem, of which no one has ever heard, and then they solve that problem, that no one has ever heard of, with some theoretical argument, which shows that the problem does not really exist...very unoriginal.
Dementia or genius? Time will tell, as Kuhn would suggest.
