Farm viability & legal issues

Farmers have to pay very high contributions to the Social Security System, i.e. ca. 150€ per month, regardless of their income. Subsistence farmers said that they have to take up jobs outside the farm only to be able to make the compulsory payment for the social security service.

In the new policy plan for Agriculture and Rural Development - PDR 2007-2013, special support is secured for farmers in Least Favoured Areas, especially hill farmers. However, only farms exceeding a size of 1 ha of UAA are eligible for the subsidy: a size that excludes most of the farmers needing support.
